Volvo electric roadway to wirelessly charge buses

Not content with the energy-sipping connect hybrid buses , energy-friendly Gothenburg , the Volvo Company and Swedish Transportation Administration have declared huge plans to hopefully augment its Hyper Bus fleet with inductive recharging . Hyper Bus , or Hybrid and Plug-in Expanded Range Bus system , recharges its power supply with a rapid recharging rig that takes only 5 to 8 minutes to top up electrical power at the end of the line . This quick charge allows the bus to operatemost of its course on electric power only simply because it doesn't need to stop for several hours to charge up . One-upping itself , the course is now looking at creating a test route labeled : ElectriCity -- clever , right ? -- that will feature a 300 to 500 meter ( roughly 1000 to 1500 feet ) inductive recharging pathway . Geared toward replacing those effective charging stations , the test route will zap the bus' power source wirelessly while it's in motion . The group desires to have a system up and running in central Gothenburg at some time in mid-2015 . Bonus ? If your stop happens to be near the wireless charging area , in the future laying a phone down on the road could help boost your battery life -- or melt the handset -- when youwait .
